Sharing the history of the Alps
Tell and share the history of the Alps is an integral part of my work. On this blog, you will find many references to historical or cultural facts that make the Alps an extraordinary territory. But it is on another medium that I write specific articles on the historical, cultural and heritage legacies that the Alpine peoples left us.
In particular, I am interested in the transmission of the History of the Western Alps, that which is closely or loosely associated with the reign of the House of Savoy. This one was the guardian of the Alps for almost a millennium. From a small county based in the Maurienne Valley, the territory spread over a vast area between Switzerland, France, and Italy, before refocusing and expanding towards the Italian peninsula.
The history of the House of Savoy is closely linked to that of the Western Alps
From a county, one arrives at a kingdom. On both sides of the Alps, House of Savoy was confronted with other powers, which generated conflicts, led to the construction of roads, railway lines and fortresses. I describe all this in my articles.
But that's not all. Sometimes, places have a story worth telling, because it's in the memory of places that lies our ability to take root and then build a better world.
Borders, legends, history and History, this is what you will find in the media "Our Alps". It is a cross-border media based in Aoste, in Italy. A bilingual region, which developed along the route of the great Alpine passes, the Aosta Valley is in itself the great crossroads that are the Alps.
Here, at home, the Alps are not barriers, but these are just and only natural limits that we must know how to tame in order to cross them with complete serenity. On both sides, humans live, with an often comparable history and common traditions.
Speaking, too, has no boundaries. speaks Franco-Provençal in Savoie as in Valais, just like in Aosta Valley, and we are talking about Occitan derivatives and Provençal in the valleys of southern Piedmont as well as in Haute Provence.
Men build borders, people ignore them.
I've grouped the articles according to topics that might interest you. You can find the same articles in several topics.
This article is itself evolving, since every two weeks I write an article for Nos Alpes. It appears on Saturday morning, and I include it in my newsletter, to which You can subscribe by following this link.

The links lead to articles in French on the Nos Alpes website, but a language selector allows you to read them in Italian as well.
