The Bavarian Alps
The Bavarian Alps!
The mountains of Romantic Bavaria
Munich and Bavaria are classic destinations on German tourist itineraries. As you well know. If you're a lover of romance, you love to walk in the footsteps of Ludwig II of Bavaria, that extravagant king, and you're probably already familiar with the famous Neuschwanstein castle, the very one that is said to have inspired Sleeping Beauty. Well, this castle is located in the Bavarian Alps.
The ridges of the Bavarian Alps form the border between Germany and Austria. The German side, with its north-facing slopes, receives all incursions of rain and snow from the north. The landscape is green in summer, and relatively snowy in winter, even at low altitudes, thanks to this climatic feature. This makes it a very popular mountain destination, where you'll find very Alpine conditions.
And the scenery? Magnificent.
Allgäu and Ammergau, land of castles and peaks
The Allgäu Alps, far to the west, loom large on the Oberstdorf horizon. Mineral barriers rise above a plain that could hardly be flatter. Oberstdorf is an idyllic village for a relaxing vacation in touch with nature. From Oberstdorf you have access to the beautiful Kleinwalsertal, an Austrian enclave in German territory with a proud alpine look, all decked out in its forest finery.
A little further east is another region, where Neuschwanstein Castle stands proudly. In the Ammergau Alps, you can choose to hike from Füssen to discover this wooded region at the foot of the mountains, and another of Ludwig II's castles, Linderhof, awaits you in its green setting. Füssen is a pretty medieval town with colorful facades and a picturesque castle. A leap back in time. And in space too, as Austria is just around the corner.
A little further east, you'll find the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain at 2962m. If you're planning to take the cable car up to the summit and enjoy views of the Tyrolean Alps or the plains south of Munich, you'd better head for Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the famous ski resort with its typical Bavarian town center. Nearby, Oberammergau is a cultural highlight, with its fully-decorated facades. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen, it's easy to get to Tyrol Seefeld and Innsbruck.
The Alps south of Munich
The closest mountains to Munich are those surrounding the magnificent Tegernsee, and you'll feel completely at home in Bayrischzell, an amazing little village where it's easy to enjoy all winter sports, just 1h30 from Munich by train. Easy to get to, and so far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Not far from the Tegernsee, just over the border, lies Achensee, a small mountain lake and hidden gem of the Tyrol.
Finally, on the way to Salzburgpast the great lake of Chiemsee and the islet Herrenchiemsee, chosen by Ludwig II to build his small equivalent of the Palace of Versailles, we find ourselves in the Berchtesgaden National Park.
Berchtesgaden National Park and its incredibly beautiful lake
Stay in Berchtesgaden to discover its peaks and marvel at the Königsee lake. The pearl of the Bavarian Alps.
The Bavarian Alps are remarkably beautiful in both summer and winter. Cross-country skiers can glide along torrents deep in the forests; virtually every mountain village has its own loop of varying length. Downhill skiers will find a ski area in every valley. No need to worry!
Bavarian culture and traditions on the menu
The Bavarian Alps have retained all their traditional charm, with their well-preserved architecture, fine cuisine and lively village festivals. But Nature also contributes to the beauty of the area, with its wooded valleys, torrents flowing through ruggedly beautiful mountains, and a multitude of lakes to give you a refreshing break.
Munich is never far away, and a visit or even a few days' stay is highly recommended. A true city of art and history, it has managed to retain its soul despite the destruction of the Second World War, which affected so many other German cities.
From here, you can easily reach all the sights of the Bavarian Alps, often by train, or extend your discovery as far as Salzburg, Austria's magnificent Baroque city.
Access to the Bavarian Alps from cities like Stuttgart, Munich and Salzburg means you can plan a holiday that combines culture and nature. So why miss out?
