When I go to a resort, I go there mainly to ski. Therefore, priority is given to the quality of the snow and the variety of slopes. However, I go skiing not only for thethe pleasure of sliding but also for the eyesI love beautiful, harmonious landscapes as well as grandiose panoramas. During the season, depending on the snow cover, the sunshine, and my physical condition, I like to visit different resorts. But over time, I ended up choosing six where I ski at least one day each winter. These are my favorite ski resorts in the French Alps. Come with me, I'll take you to discover these six beautiful resorts.

Les Saisies
Asked at 1,650 m altitude in BeaufortainThe resort of Les Saisies reveals a mountain face that combines traditional charm and a generous ski area. Nestled between the gentle slopes of the Signal de Bisanne and the larch forests, the village preserves wooden and stone chalets that blend into the surroundings. Here you can breathe the pure air of an alpine pasture that has become a refuge for Nordic and alpine skiing. The gaze rises and sweeps the Mont Blanc range, before settling on the ridges of Beaufortain, with their harmonious shapes: this double dimension — grandiose panorama and “village” spirit — constitutes the soul of Les Saisies. The alpine area, integrated into Diamond Space, offers slopes suitable for all levels and benefits from a remarkable snowy micro-climate, which has earned it the nickname of “snow loft”.
For Nordic skiing enthusiasts, this is a mecca: more than 120 km of cross-country trails laid out on the plateau, with Olympic tracks inherited from the Albertville-92 games, give the place a particular intensity.
In terms of atmosphere, Les Saisies cultivates conviviality, simplicity and a warm welcome: families will find a safe playground, beginners a space conducive to progress, while more experienced skiers can reach the more committed sectors or take advantage of the link to the Espace Diamant. It is an excellent destination to start the season gently. Also essential is the surrounding nature, protected and rich; a biodiversity observatory lists more than two hundred animal species in the area, highlighting the resort's commitment to respectful mountains. Finally, when you move away from the slopes, the gentle way of life is expressed in the village streets, the restaurants serving Savoyard specialties, and the special moments watching the sunset over the snow-covered mountain pastures.
In Les Saisies, the snow is reliable, the panorama stunning, the atmosphere serene: a formula that charms families as much as lovers of authentic mountain life. I love it.

Avoriaz
In the heights of the Ardoisières valley, at an altitude of 1,800 meters and in the heart of the vast and interconnected domain of Doors of the Sun, Avoriaz asserts itself as a unique resort, a subtle alchemy between bold architecture, abundant snow and total accessibility to skiing. village, without cars, invites you to put on your skis every morning at the foot of your bed: simple, direct, immediate. From the snow-covered balconies you can admire the Dents Blanches, the Dents du Midi and the horizon to the south above the Morzine valley, while the entire area offers some 600 km of slopes to explore. Powder lovers will find their happiness on the Pointe de Mossette or the Chavanette, legendary “Swiss Wall”, while families and beginners benefit from vast areas perfectly adapted to everyone's level.
I am one of those who appreciate the particular architecture of Avoriaz, designed by Jacques Labro and his colleagues. Facades of wood and dark stone for an organic design that blends into the rock and the sky. Beyond aesthetics, it is the landscape that takes precedence: a wide plateau overlooking Morzine, a larch forest, guarantee an authentic alpine atmosphere. In this quiet, car-free resort, everything remains close to the slopes. Of course, the crowds can be intense and some areas congested, but the feeling of freedom is preserved by the breathtaking panoramas that emerge when crossing a pass or a ridge. When the day of skiing is over, we enjoy a drink in a pedestrian bar in the heart of the village or we relax in an integrated aquatic center. Avoriaz is a large resort but what's more, it's alive! I'm a big fan of the spirit of Avoriaz.

La Plagne (with a focus on Belle Plagne)
In the vast alpine area of La Plagne, and particularly in Belle Plagne, we feel the happy marriage between grandiose panoramas, bold architecture and generous sliding. Perched at an altitude of 2,050 m, Belle Plagne dominates the Tarentaise valley and opens onto a setting of ridges and peaks, whileMont Blanc looms on the horizon. The domain, connected to that of Arcs under the banner “Paradiski”, offers more than 400 km of slopes, an inexhaustible source of pleasure for lovers of flowing turns and beautiful snow. In Belle Plagne, we find a unique architecture that combines alpine construction and contemporary comfort.
The strong point is the quality of the snow cover : the exposure and high altitude guarantee exceptional skiing conditions even late in the season. The villages that make up the resort, including Belle Plagne, are not crossed by cars, which remain far from view, in outdoor or underground parking lots. The snow thus remains immaculately white for the pleasure of the eyes. For families or beginners, Belle Plagne is also an admirable playground – gentle slopes, well-rated ski schools and a reassuring atmosphere.
The panorama from the slopes is both vast and generous: the light on the reliefs and the fresh, clean air remind you that you are in the heart of the Alps. Mont Blanc, omnipresent in the landscape confirms this impression. Larches, fir trees and snow crunching under the skis: this is the atmosphere we are looking for.
We enjoy strolling between the resort's hamlets. We rest here after an intense day, admire the sunset over the snow-capped mountains, and feel the mountain spirit. The alpine experience here is complete and memorable. It's in La Plagne that I have my best memories of skiing with my family, and I'm very attached to it.

Tignes
At the Tignes resort, nestled at an altitude of 2,100 m In Haute-Tarentaise, winter is experienced in the immensity of spaces and the verticality of the slopes. At dawn, we clip on our bindings and head towards the icy heights of Grande Motte glacierThe landscape embraces the harshness of the Alps: white ridges, low winter lights, frozen lakes and steep peaks overlooking the valley. As you climb to the higher areas, you reach an almost unreal setting, where the snow remains untouched for a long time and where off-piste skiing is negotiated in a mixture of couloirs and open fields.
The ski area, combined with that of Val d'Isère, offers exceptional breadth: the former "Espace Killy" is a benchmark, and in Tignes you can enjoy this vast terrain in complete freedom. The area offers wide slopes for carving beautiful curves, areas reserved for beginners, and technical sectors for the more experienced. It is also convenient: numerous ski-in/ski-out departures, particularly in Tignes-Le Lac and Val Claret, and a decidedly sporty atmosphere, but not lacking in mountain charm.
But what Tignes knows how to do is extend the alpine experience until late in the season: until May. This is where I come at the end of the season to be sure to still have beautiful snow.
After a day spent carving curves, you find refuge in comfortable accommodation, savoring the symbiosis between the grandeur of the elements and modern comfort. In Tignes, the mountain imposes its law: altitude, snow, quality ski slopes. It's a station that doesn't do things by halvesI love its vast spaces and its viewpoints overlooking the wild ridges of the Vanoise. Even in high season, you are sometimes alone on the slopes at the back of the area.

Montgenevre
In Montgenèvre, at the Franco-Italian border, winter takes on a special flavor made of light, fresh air and generous panoramas. Located at an altitude of over 1,800 m, this little gem nestled in the pass of the same name offers an authentic mountain stopover while being connected to the vast area of the Milky Way (Via Lattea), opening 400 km of slopes: a rare advantage for a resort that is still gentle and friendly. And one of the rare cross-border ski areas.
The landscape is both harmonious and wild: larch forests, groomed clearings under the Southern Alps sun, and a panorama of the nearby Italian peaks. On the slopes, beginners and intermediates alike will find what they are looking for: wide and welcoming slopes, wooded and open areas follow one another, and we also appreciate the quieter areas where we can glide in complete serenity. Experts also have their favorite areas. The snow cover is reliable there. : located on a pass, the resort benefits from favorable weather conditions which, according to specialists, ensure better conditions than some of its Italian neighbors.
In Montgenèvre, the architecture of the old village and the charming alleys preserve a sincere mountain atmosphere, far from the "ski factory" effect, even if at the exit of the resort many buildings recall the tourist vocation of the place. The price of the passes and the warm welcome are also among the assets. Of course, this gentleness implies a quieter après-ski, without much night-time excitement, but it is precisely this calm that charms those who seek the mountains without excess. In summary, Montgenèvre succeeds in this rare bet: combining accessibility, authenticity, warm atmosphere and high-performance skiing. A resort that is lived, serene, between two countries, between nature and skiing, between sharing and tranquility. It is this cross-border aspect, and the possibility of going to eat very quickly in Italy, which marks the strong point of Montgenèvre in my opinion.

Val Thorens
Highest ski resort in Europe, at 2,300 m altitude, Val Thorens imposes its presence at the top of the Belleville valley, being one of the snowiest on the continent. On the resort's snow front, you grasp the scale of the scenery: a bare mineral cirque, all white in winter, dominated by glaciers, which awakens under a sky that seems larger than anywhere else. You even have the impression of being higher than the clouds that glide below. The panoramas from the resort's 150 km of slopes are so vast that you could spend all day trying to find the names of the peaks on the horizon. The Val Thorens area blends into the vast network of ski slopes of the Three Valleys area, the largest in the world, with more than 600 km of slopes.
What everyone praises is not only the altitude - a guarantee of reliable snow - but also the modernity and power of the lift system: funitels, high-capacity cable cars, fast links that allow you to switch from one slope to another with fluidity.
Skiers of all levels will find something to delight them: wide and perfectly groomed slopes for speed sliding, “discovery” areas for relaxed beginnings, and for the most demanding, the switch to the Orelle sector, calm and quiet. One of my favorite areas.
After skiing, après-ski: bars, entertainment, international atmosphere... In Val Thorens, the mountain is experienced intensely, in height, speed, reliability. It is a resort that does not promise the intimacy of a lost hamlet, but offers a “large format” adventure where snow, terrain, altitude and energy combine for lovers of skiing and space. It is my favorite resort because of its easy access from Orelle, its exceptional snow and sunshine, the length of its slopes and the feeling of skiing in contact with the sky.

Other resorts in the French Alps also have assets that I really appreciate: the fantastic elevation changes at the resort of Two Alps, forest skiing at Megève, the landscapes of contaminated, and many others that I tell in my articles specifically dedicated to them. Find them by typing “ski” in the search bar at the top of this page.
