In summer, the mountains offer many refuges from the heat. There are the high-altitude forests, the shores of lakes, and the windswept mountain passes. But there is another world, even more secret: that of the gorges.

The Devil's Bridge Gorge These gorges were formed at the end of the last Ice Age. Fed by glacial meltwater, the Dranse de Morzine river gradually carved a narrow passage through the limestone, sculpting a veritable chasm with walls that rise to over fifty meters high. The site has been a protected area since 1908 and is now part of the Chablais UNESCO Global Geopark.

The visit has a theatrical quality. After crossing a cool, shady beech forest, the path plunges abruptly down large metal staircases. The air cools immediately. The roar of the Dranse River rises from the bottom of the canyon, while immense boulders seem suspended between the cliffs. The walkways offer close-up views of the water's work: potholes, perfectly circular cavities, and walls polished like precious stones.

The very name of the place fuels the imagination. According to a local legend, the Devil built a bridge here to seize the soul of the first traveler to cross it. The inhabitants, cleverer than him, supposedly sent a cat or a dog across, provoking the demon's wrath, and he vanished into the depths of the canyon.

The coolness is constant. Even during the intense heat of July or August, the temperature remains surprisingly pleasant thanks to the humidity and the permanent shade of the cliffs.

La The visit lasts approximately one hour. and requires descending and then ascending approximately 120 meters in elevation via well-maintained stairs. Free parking is available at the entrance to the site, accessible from the D902. It is also possible to reach the site by bus via the Thonon-Morzine intercity line.

The surrounding area offers many opportunities for exploration. Within fifteen kilometers are Lake Jotty and its dam, and the medieval village of Saint-Jean-d'Aulps. Aulps AbbeyLake Geneva or even Morzine and the Portes du Soleil. The gorges make an excellent excursion if you are staying on the shores of Lake Geneva or in the resorts of Chablais.

À ServozBetween Passy and Chamonix, the Arve Valley narrows abruptly. The great granite walls of the Mont Blanc massif draw closer, and torrents rush down from all directions. It is here that the Diosaz carved out one of the most beautiful canyons in the French Alps.

The visit begins at the edge of the forest. Very quickly, the path transforms into a series of suspended walkways, metal bridges, and staircases clinging to the rock. The torrent leaps from cascade to cascade, disappears into narrow fissures, reappears in pools of emerald water, and then plunges back into the canyon.

The Diosaz is different from other Savoyard gorges. Here, everything is verticalThe granite cliffs seem to close in above the visitor as water sometimes plunges dozens of meters with a constant roar. The atmosphere is almost tropical: thick mosses, giant ferns, constant humidity, and dim light.

The site was developed in the 19th century under the impetus of Achille Cazin, who wanted to allow everyone to discover this natural wonder. Even today, the trail retains an adventurous aspect that appeals to both children and adults.

The round trip walk is approximately 2,5 kilometers and involves nearly 600 steps. Allow between one and a half and two hours to fully enjoy the site.

The Gorges of the Diosaz The gorge is generally open from June to September, weather permitting. Free parking is available at the entrance. Servoz is also served by the Mont-Blanc Express, whose station is about a 15-minute walk away. Bus lines from the Chamonix valley also provide access.

The surroundings are exceptional. Just a few kilometers away, you can reach Chamonix and the Aiguille du Midi, the Plateau d'Assy, Lake Passy, and the villages of Les Houches and Servoz, which have preserved remarkable mountain architecture. The gorges make a perfect stop during a stay in the Mont Blanc valley.

The Fier gorges: a secret world on the outskirts of Annecy

It's hard to believe that such a spectacular canyon is hidden just ten minutes from Annecy.

From the small village of LovagnyA forest path leads towards the gorges. Suddenly, the ground seems to give way. A deep fissure opens between two limestone walls and the Fier appears, thirty meters below, in a roar of foam and whirlpools.

The Fier Gorges They measure approximately 250 meters in length and are only a few meters wide in places. The cliffs reach about fifty meters in height and create an almost surreal atmosphere.

The discovery is made via a metal walkway fixed directly into the rock for over one hundred and fifty years. We advance slowly, suspended above the torrent, while the water has sculpted astonishing shapes: giant's kettles, stone waves, cavities and reliefs that sometimes seem to draw faces.

The place is steeped in mystery. Local legends speak of fairies, spirits, and tragic loves linked to the nearby Montrottier castle. When the light softens at the end of the day and the roar of the water echoes against the walls, the imagination easily takes flight.

The visit is short, about an hour, and perfectly suited for families. Free parking is available at the entrance to the site. The Fier gorges are open from spring until mid-October.

Their location is ideal for rounding off a day trip around Lake Annecy. Just a few minutes away are Montrottier Castle, Annecy's old town, the lake beaches, and the Semnoz mountain. The gorges are probably one of the most unique excursions to take during a holiday near Annecy.

The Sierroz Gorges: the romantic canyon of Aix-les-Bains

À Gresy-sur-AixOver the centuries, the Sierroz river has carved a spectacular canyon into the Savoyard limestone. The gorges were one of the major tourist attractions of the Belle Époque. Visitors to the spas of Aix-les-Bains came here seeking refreshment and excitement after their thermal treatments.

The place has even entered the annals of French literary history. It is here that...Alphonse de Lamartine would have experienced one of the defining episodes of his relationship with Julie Charles, later immortalized in his famous poem Le Lac.

Today, the walk allows you to rediscover this romantic site. The path gradually descends towards the bottom of the Sierroz gorgesThe cliffs draw closer, the light becomes more subdued, and we rediscover that feeling of freshness that once made the place famous.

The Sierroz River leaps between the rocks, forming waterfalls and pools of clear water. The vegetation is abundant: mosses, ferns, and tall trees create an almost secluded atmosphere, just minutes from the hustle and bustle of...Aix les Bains.

La visit to the gorges It's easy and particularly enjoyable for families. It takes about an hour. A car park provides direct access to the entrance of the gorge.

Within fifteen kilometers, there is no shortage of ideas for discovery: Aix-les-Bains and its thermal baths, the esplanade of Lake Bourget, the Revard viewpoint, the village of Brison-Saint-Innocent or the Hautecombe Abbey.

The Sierroz gorges undoubtedly constitute one of the most beautiful surprises of the Aix basin: a small romantic canyon where people come to seek both a bit of coolness and a parenthesis of nature and poetry near the largest natural lake in France.
