Sudtirol, the region that gives you a change of scene
When you find yourself in Sudtirol - or Alto Adige in Italian - it's a complete change of scenery.
Close your eyes. German is spoken all around you, as it is in Austria.
Just listen! You'll feel the warmth of the South, of these Italians like no others. Their Latin roots may be far away, but the art of living is very much present: they party, they laugh, they have fun, they enjoy life, the sun, the good weather, the good times.
Smell it! Taste! We love to eat in Sudtirol. Local specialities are served in charming restaurants. The influence of Tyrol influence is everywhere, but here, food is accompanied by local wine, such as Traminer, which is well known to Alsatians, and whose grape variety comes from the Tramin vineyards in this region.
Knödel, Speck, game sauces, delicate cheeses and fruit. Your taste buds won't be able to resist the temptations of Sudtirol.
Open your eyes and take a look! Marvel at the architectural beauty of the churches and castles. The towns of Bolzano, Merano and Bressanone/Brixen are steeped in history. Just like Tirolo Castle, which gave its name to the lineage that shaped the territory now known as Tyrol. Bolzano, the economic capital, the Italian Innsbruck, with its university, its businesses and its Germanic-Latin soul. Merano, a spa town at the bottom of the valley, is adorned with magnificent parks and gardens ideal for walks by the curists of yesteryear, who lived in the palaces that once housed such celebrities as the Austro-Hungarian Empress Sissi. Bressanone/Brixen, on the north-south axis linking Germany and Italy, is the guardian of Sudtirol traditions, both in its architecture and its gastronomy. Here, Italian is spoken less frequently, the climate is harsher, and the Sudtirol flag flies proudly in the air.
Western Sudtirol, valleys and high mountains
In the western part of Sudtirol, the Val Venosta is famous for its wines and fruit, which are grown right up to the borders of Switzerland and Austria, while the Val Senales, with its high-altitude ski slopes, and Solda/Sulden, at the foot of the Ortles glaciers, are also beautiful mountain areas. But the prize for curiosity goes to the lake on the Col de Resia, with its famous bell tower rising from the surface of the water to bear witness to an ancient village that was swallowed up by the waters when this artificial reservoir was created. It's not the only one in the Alps: just think of Tignes or Lac de Serre-Ponçon.
Eastern Sudtirol, Dolomite country
Eastern Sudtirol is the kingdom of the Dolomites. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, their legendary beauty lies in their color and form. Their impassable towers, crenellations, statuesque shapes and the crosses that often crown their summits make them veritable geological cathedrals.
Many legends explain the colors of the mountains at sunset (the Enrosadira), or the blue of the lakes. The "Pallidi Mountains" (Pale Mountains), woven of Moon threads for the love of a princess, blend myth, nature and tradition.
Here, you can enjoy winter sports or hikes around adorable, year-round villages.
In Val Gardena, you can choose between Ortisei and Selva Valgardena, two well-known resorts for skiers, but also two typical centers of the Ladin world, whose language is spoken only in a few Dolomite valleys.
Further north, the Val Badia appeals to skiers of all abilities, while the Val Pusteria is especially attractive to cross-country skiers, who can enjoy their favourite sport from Dobbiaco or San Candido over long distances in a beautiful landscape as far as the lake of Misurina lake.
A special mention for Val Fiscalina, in the Sesto Dolomites: a dream setting. It's like being transported into a fairy tale. You'd expect follies, gnomes and princesses to appear, and local legends are full of them. These same valleys are frequented by cyclists in summer, in search of the challenges of crossing the many mountain passes.
The beautiful memories we bring back from Sudtirol
Sudtirol has world-famous sites whose photos are constantly circulating on the web and social networks: Lake Braies, Lake Carezza, Val di Funes, Val Fiscalina... When you get there, you won't be able to hold back an "aaah, it's here!
A final word on gastronomy. At Sudtirol, you'll learn that there's a lot more to mountain cuisine than cheese, potatoes and charcuterie. Here, every starter, every main course and every dessert is a world apart, with its origins on both sides of the Alpine slopes that have shaped its history.
Sudtirol is an art of living that's all about the pleasure of discovering trails, dense forests and streams sparkling in the sun in a different way. It's a region shaped by Man to live in symbiosis with Nature.
The beautiful, poetic legends that haunt these valleys will haunt you long after your visit...
